Dance Exploration’s Ballet/Tap Combo Class is perfect for children who want to be soft and graceful, but also enjoy making a lot of noise! The Dance Exploration, LLC Ballet/Tap Combo Class follows the ‘Dance to Learn!’® Curriculum and is designed to teach the whole child through the 6 Methods of Dance™ which have been formed based on the stages of childhood development. Like Pre-Ballet and Creative Dance; Ballet/Tap combo classes follow a themed class structure which changes each month to keep class exciting as part of the ‘Dance to Discover!’™ Method. The first 30 minutes of class is focused on ballet movements. Students will learn the five positions of the arms and feet, basic body positions, introductory ballet movements as well as ballet terminology. After warming up, children move to the center where they must learn to balance and stand with their feet in the five basic turned out positions. Careful attention is placed on hip, knee and toe alignment to ensure that children are turning out properly, this is primarily for injury prevention. Next children practice movements performed at a ‘barre.’ Pliés, tendus, degagés, relevés and passés are some examples of the beginning movements taught at the barre. The activities are based on the Story Dance Exploration™ which is teaching new movements based on figurative and play-based structure. Next children move onto Across the Floor portion of class. Across the floor movements are taught progressively to ensure that children warm up the muscles and don’t strain themselves. Across the Floor ends with the Story Dance Pathways™ which are movement based obstacle courses based on the theme and utilized to combine and link movements together as the basis for teaching choreography. After 30 minutes of ballet, we will change shoes and switch to tap class where we will focus on making noises with our toes, heels and balls of the feet. Tap class also includes warm ups and across the floor sections all based on the theme. The focus on stretching, flexibility, strength, coordination and proper execution is part of the ‘Dance to Move!’™ method. Fun props such as Teddy Bears, Magic Wands, Hula Hoops and Scarves are used in this class to help children with association to learn the moves more quickly. Children work with partners in the class frequently to encourage not only social skills but to gain artistic inspiration from their peers. Partner work and teamwork are included as part of the ‘Dance to Accept!’™ method where children learn to accept each other’s unique talents through dance and movement activities. Children’s artistic freedom and self-expression are encouraged by their teachers by creating a positive “Yes” environment! At the end of class, children are encouraged to Free Dance to express themselves artistically! Self-expression through free dance time is included as part of the ‘Dance to Express!’™ Method. Free Dance also incorporates the ‘Dance to Create!’™ Method as children may be challenged to include variations on their movements including directions, shapes, weights, nouns, verbs, emotions and more. Challenging the students to associate these concepts with movement will enhance their creative thinking and problem solving processes. All Ballet/Tap Combo students are taught choreography. They learn a ballet routine as well as a tap routine. Routines are based on the child’s ability and talent and designed to encourage artistic and technical growth. Children get to share their dances with parents at select parent observation days throughout the session. Ballet/Tap Combo classes include the Terpsichore Literacy Program™ as well as the Dance Exploration, LLC ‘Dance to Learn!’® at Home with Me™ Program!
