    Class Description
  • The Dance Exploration Elementary Program is a valuable addition to any public or private elementary school location. Dance Exploration Elementary Classes follow the ‘Dance to Learn!’® Curriculum. The ‘Dance to Learn!’® Curriculum  revolves around 5 Methods of Dance™  which are designed to teach the whole child at all stages of their development. Dance Exploration Elementary Program classes build critical and creative thinking skills, enhance creative expression and introduce social-emotional skills such as patience, waiting turns and sharing.  The Dance Exploration Program for Elementary Schools include an AcceptDANCE™ Policy which encourages healthy relationships among participants. The Dance Exploration Elementary Program goals and outcomes align with state and national standards for Dance Education as well as align with Common Core Standards for Grades 1-5. 

    Classes are structured for success! The Dance Exploration Class Flow is choreographed to follow the natural progressions of a child’s movement and learning abilities to ensure mastery of class objectives and movement studies. Dance Exploration classes brighten a child’s school day by waking the brain and body up with lively, and educational dance based movement games and activities. Class is led by a passionate and Dance Educator Certified in the ‘Dance to Learn!’® Curriculum who cares about nurturing the success of each student at every turn.

    The learning does not stop in the classroom. The ‘Dance to Learn!’® Family Engagement™ is included in all classes. It stresses the important role parents and caregivers play in the academic success of their children.

  • Elementary Program Objectives

    Objective 1: Gross Motor Development

    Students at the end of the Session should be able to perform beginning to intermediate dance moves for mastery. As well as understand the terminology and meaning of each dance move.

    Objective 2: Simuli

    Students should be able to dance with and to different stimuli, rhymes and tempos. Students should also be able to create their own music with instruments, body parts and other stimuli.

    Objective 3: Cognitive Development

    Students should learn a new cognitive lesson each week to help them in their school work. They should be able to determine how dance relates to other arts, and other ideas not related to the arts. They should be able to use dance to problem solve.

    Objective 4: Genre

    Students should be able to understand how their dance genre was started, the history and be able to compare and contrast their genre with others.

    Objective 5: Anatomy

    Students should have a basic knowledge of anatomy and recognize which muscles should work to perform a movement.

    Objective 6: Emotional Development

    Students should display an increase in determination, focus, motivation, and memorization throughout the session. They should know how to set goals and should show an increased desire to accomplish their goals.

    Objective 7: Social Development

    Students should be able to work in small groups. As teamwork is common, students should display tolerance for their peers and be able to clearly communicate how each classmate brings a unique flair and talent to the group.

    Objective 8: Creative Development

    Students should actively participate in student created movements and choreography. Students should be able to contribute their ideas and have an understanding in the creative processes of dance and choreography.

    Objective 9: Performance

    During the graduation, students should display a sound knowledge in dance movements. They should have mastered the basics of movements in their genre and have memorized their routine. The graduation should also include improv or student choreographed sections to allow for artistic expression. The Graduation should include certificates of completion and allow for families to video and take photos. It is a recital- not just a class!

    Objective 10: Knowledge Retention

    Students should understand the ‘Dance to Learn!’® class flow and what components make up a dance class. They should also understand how the class flow relates to progressive movements.

  • Elementary Program Class Flow

    Terminology/History Study

    Elementary classes begin with a Dance Terminology or History Study as a way to Introduce the Concept. Like our preschool program- we should theme our classes to keep them exciting and fresh. For example in a hip hop class, if we choose Breakdance as our word study our whole class would be focused on the fundamentals of breakdancing. The following week we would focus on Robotics and Isolations.

    Warming Up/Introducing the Concept

    In a Dance Exploration Elementary Program Class, we begin with a standing warm up. Warm ups usually take place in lines or a circle with the Dance Educator facing the students. This allows the Dance Educator to see all of the children and quickly engage around the room with each child. Warm ups include stretches and cardio exercises designed to get the blood flowing to the muscles to help prevent injury. The warm ups also include an opportunity to discuss, or explore through movement, the terminology/history from the day’s class study.

    Exploring the Concept

    In a Dance Exploration Elementary class, Exploring the Concept is a continuation of our terminology/history study. The class should participate in a group movement activity focused on the study. Discussion, participation and movement should all be included in this portion of class.

    Developing Skills

    In a Dance Exploration Elementary class, the Developing Skills portion is technique focused. It includes students performing simple dance moves across or around the room with a focus on technical execution. Developing Skills is usually performed individually as opposed to a group, or for larger classes, with two or three dancers travelling at a time. On occasion, dancers will develop skills with a partner if it suits the theme. In the Elementary Program- movements can be more advanced and a combination of movements can be taught.

    Creating

    In the Elementary Program the Creating portion of class will focus on student creation more than teacher creation. Students should be encouraged to create new dance moves, choreography or work together to put an idea or concept into movements.

    Cool Down

    In an Elementary Class- the group should come together at the end of class to discuss what was learned that week and compare and discuss previous weeks. A recap of the session and concepts learned will help children apply the techniques and movements outside of class.

    6 Methods of Dance™
    'Dance to Discover!'™

    The ‘Dance to Discover Method!’™ focuses on Cognitive Development in the stages of early childhood development. Cognition is the process of intellectual development and how a child learns to process their surroundings, solve problems, and think both creatively and analytically. In the Dance Exploration Elementary Program, each class is focused on a terminology word based on the dance genre we are learning. That word can be related to a sub-genre, a movemente within the genre, or an important historical moment, dancer or choreographer that influenced the genre. Conceptual Based Learning allows our dancers to focus on ideas or experiences that are familiar to them and expand their knowledge in those areas through dance and movement.

    Dance to Express™

    The Dance to Express™ Method focuses on Emotional Development in the Stages of Child Development. Emotional Development is a child’s ability to experience, express and manage their emotions and feelings. In the Dance to Learn® Curriculum, the Dance to Express™ Method also targets Language Development in our dancers as we are constantly teaching new dance terminology along with the pronunciations and meanings. In the Dance Exploration Elementary Program, the Dance to Express™ Method focuses on the students’ ability to use dance and movement as a means to communicateand tell a story. In combination with the Dance to Create™ Method, students will be challenged to create an 8-16 count phrase of movement to be performed during their choreographic work. Each student will need to communicate their ideas to ensure their ideas are captured throughout the process.

    Dance to Accept™

    The ‘Dance to Accept!’™ Method targets Social Development. Social Development is the means in which children interact with others to establish and develop positive and rewarding relationships. Dance Exploration teaches in a positive ‘Yes’ Environment where artistry, imagination and innovations can thrive. The ‘Yes’ Environment cannot survive with negativity or intolerance. Therefore, from day one, children are taught how to work in groups and in teams to strengthen their cooperation while working with others. This teaches children about interpersonal ways of thinking, improving their ability to communicate and relate to others. In the Dance Exploration Elementary Program, students will focus on the ability to appreciate the talents of each individual child in class as well as accept each other’s differences. This willingness to appreciate each other and the unique perspectives and talents of each child in class will be a great way for children to overcome intolerance and bullying.

    Dance to Create™

    The Dance to Create™ Method focuses on a child’s Creative Development. Creativity fuels a child’s ability to solve-problems, innovate, and explore new and unfamiliar areas. It is the hallmark of ingenuity, which may lead to successes later in life in the world of art, science, and technology. Children who are encouraged to think creatively exhibit higher self-esteem and motivation. In the Dance Exploration Elementary Program, the class flow includes a Dance to Create™ portion of class where children work in groups or individually to create an 8-16 count phrase of choreography to be used in the final Showcase Performance. Educators and Students work collaboratively to create a phrase that is age and skill appropriate. When students create their own phrases of movement they are learning to take pride in their work, recognize that dedication to a project can render a positive outcome and ultimately learn how to use movement to communicate and express themselves.

    Dance to Move™

    The Dance to Move™ Method targets a child’s Physical Development both in fine and gross motor skills. Fine Motor Development is the child’s ability to move smaller muscles such as fingers and toes, it can also refer to hand-eye coordination. Gross Motor Development involves a child’s ability to move on a larger scale such as dancing or playing sports. In the Dance Exploration Elementary Program, we target both fine and gross motor development. Students in an Elementary class may be given props, on occasion, that can be held and manipulated through dance and movement. In the Dance Exploration Elementary Program, students also spend some time writing on the weekly worksheets as they learn their terminology or history studies. Writing is a great way to further develop Fine Motor skills, as the action of grasping and moving the pen to create the desired outcome requires strong Fine Motor skills. In the Dance Exploration Elementary Program, dance movements are taught at a more intermediate level of skill. Dancers at this age will understand how their bodies move in and through space. Students will be challenged to perform skills for mastery as the more advanced movements are taught progressively to avoid injury. The dancers in the Dance Exploration Elementary Program will be able to link multiple movements together in short phrases as well as memorize choreography to perform at the Showcase for friends and family.
