• From the Page to the Stage™

    Class Description
  • In Broadway Exploration’s “From the Page to the Stage” classes, children will get a chance to write, direct and produce their own theatrical production based on popular picture books. Books are age and grade appropriate. Inspired by Dance Exploration’s 5 Methods of Learning, Broadway Exploration also follows 5 methods of learning: Discovery, Creation, Expression, Acceptance, and Movement. Each class begins with Discovery. In this part of class students Discover the picture book they are reading. Discovery includes understanding character and setting development. The Creation Method of Education involves, recreating the characters and plot through play, pretend and portrayal activities. To implement the Expression Method, each child is given an opportunity to develop their individual character through fun and interactive character development games such as charades, character in the middle, and more. During the Creativity Method, preschoolers will be required to act out different scenarios from the picture book. They may be asked to improvise or follow the direction of their Certified Educator through a script. Students interacting with other students during scene work will build teamwork, creative problem solving skills and collaborative interactions as part of the Acceptance Method. Movement is included throughout class as students learn how to move and act as different characters. Whether it’s a large, gross motor movement or a small facial feature or manipulating  a prop or object, these skills will improve a preschooler’s motor development. The Certified Educator will teach in a positive “yes” environment to ensure that each child feels safe, is heard and is successful in the class. From the Page to the Stage participates in the Dance to Learn® at Home with Me Program.

  • What will my Child Learn?

    Gross and Fine Motor Development
    • Students will learn basic stage directions including upstage, downstage, stage right and stage left and how to move throughout the space.
    • Students will learn how to move their bodies to perform a certain character or role through improvisation and acting exercises.
    • To perform certain characters, students may be challenged to perform large gross motor movements or hold and manipulate props to strengthen fine motor skills
    • Facial muscles will be strengthened as students may be asked to make faces to portray different feeling and emotions
    Cognitive Development
    • Students will learn the five essential elements of a story including the characters, setting, plot, conflict and resolution
    • Students will improve their reading comprehension as they are challenged to recreate the story through acting, movement and improvisation.
    Social and Emotional Development
    • Children will learn to interact with other children as they work together to retell a picture book through collaborative play.
    • Students learn how to wait patiently, take turns and work cooperatively in a group
    • Students will be able to express themselves and ideas through different character choices and roles.
    • Students will learn how to listen, take direction and follow instructions from a teacher or director.
    Language Skills
    • Each week students will learn about a new acting or play writing technique or skill, the origin the technique, and how to apply it to their work.
    • Students will learn how to express their needs, desires and problems to their director and their peers.
    • Preschoolers will improve their reading readiness as they may be asked to read from the picture books
