Student Teacher Education Program for a Career in the Performance Arts

The S.T.E.P. Program is a Student Teacher Education Program developed by Dance Exploration, LLC and designed to give High School Students hands on training and education in the art of teaching performance arts classes! Students participating in the S.T.E.P. Program will be able to shadow a certified Dance Exploration or Broadway Exploration instructor as they teach dance, music, theatre and more to students at local elementary schools and preschools around the Denver Metro Area. We are excited to allow high schoolers the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of qualified professionals in the art of teaching, to give them a new perspective and career path in the Performance Arts. Students in the program must maintain an average GPA of 3.0 to be eligible for the program and must come referred from a teacher at their school. Limited spots are available in the program, therefore it is in high demand.

What can Students Expect from working in the S.T.E.P. Program?
Students will receive hands on training in the field as they work side by side a Certified Educator. S.T.E.P. students will be expected to assist in the classes as an assistant to the Educator and may, from time to time, be asked to lead activities. S.T.E.P. students will learn important skills in classroom management, creative problem solving, planning lessons and guiding a class of 10-15 students.

Are S.T.E.P. Participants employees of Dance Exploration?
Students in the S.T.E.P. program are hired as independent contractors and not as employees. S.T.E.P. participants are paid $12-$20/hour. S.T.E.P.  participants will be required to follow the same teaching guidelines as Educators as it pertains to attendance and general policies. All S.T.E.P. participants under the age of 18 will be required to have a signed work release from their parents.

How long are S.T.E.P. Participants Contracted?
S.T.E.P. Participants are contracted for a full semester. Semesters at Dance Exploration run from August-December and January-May. Some S.T.E.P. Participants may be offered opportunities in the summer months. Students must reapply for each new semester to show they are maintaining a 3.0 grade point average. Students who have participated in S.T.E.P. previously are given seniority to new S.T.E.P. participants and are generally contracted to the same schools and educators as previous semesters.

Is a Career Opportunity Guaranteed After Completion of S.T.E.P.?
S.T.E.P. Participants are eligible to join the Dance Exploration team when they turn 18. S.T.E.P. Participants are given seniority to open teaching positions. S.T.E.P. Participants must complete all hiring requirements to become a Certified Educator at Dance Exploration, LLC.

What is the difference between a Certified Educator and S.T.E.P. Participant?
Certified Educators have completed online training courses offered through the Dance to Learn® University as well as 5-15 hours of assistant hours in the field. The  courses are not made available to S.T.E.P. Participants. S.T.E.P. Participants learn how to teach effectively and will have a general understanding of the Dance to Learn® Curriculum and Methods as well as Classroom Management techniques as they experience the hands on learning each week.

Can Participation in S.T.E.P. Count as a school Credit?
Dance Exploration, LLC can exchange S.T.E.P. hours for credit, however this is up to each individual school to determine if the hours can be used towards credit. Please contact your school administrative team to learn more about S.T.E.P. for credit.
